The Glimmering Fields

By Tim Catherall

A collection of five short stories set in World War 1 and World War 2. They range from the story of two brothers in the Indian army who follow very different paths to the tale of the first RAF pilot to wear contact lenses. In between the Great War poets are featured and a story of the futility and random nature of war. Written and illustrated by me. The title is taken from a Siegfried Sassoon poem.

The 120 page anthology contains five short stories and additional pages of drawings and art.

The five stories are

True to their salt. A true story of two brothers serving in the Indian Army on the Western Front in 1914. They take very different paths as their loyalties are tested.

An Infantry Officer wins the Military Cross. How war poet Siegfried Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for bravery. He went on to protest against the conduct of the war and write some of the most famous anti war poetry and prose.

Dulce et Decorum est. An illustrated imagining of probably the most well known British war poem. Owen knew Sassoon and was tragically killed days before the war ended.

The Patrol. A story based on a WW2 novel that I have moved to WW1. It’s about the futile, random and wasteful nature of war.

Glass Eye Warnes. The story of my Grandfathers cousin who was the first RAF pilot to wear contact lenses in WW2.

About Tim

The Glimmering Fields is my debut graphic novel. Having spent my life drawing and with a deep fascinated in history, particularly the Great War and WW2, it was only natural to merge the two and produce a graphic novel. Or comic as we used to call them. I live in the UK with my wife. I have two daughters and a dog called Hector.
